Research
Broadly, my research examines how stereotypes influence our self-perceptions as well as our perceptions of others.
The Influence of Stereotypes on Self-Perceptions
This line of work focuses on the phenomenon of stereotype validation, which occurs when a stereotype about a person is made salient to them after a stereotype-relevant task performance. When the stereotype is in line with a person's performance perceptions, he or she should experience increased certainty in their original performance perceptions. My work examines under what circumstances stereotype validation occurs, in what ways can it hurt versus help individuals, and what methods can be used to curb this phenomenon when it is harmful.
The Influence of Stereotypes on Perceptions of Others
This line of work investigates how stereotypes of different single identities (e.g., race, age, gender, etc.) combine to influence stereotypic judgments. For example, are faces of Black children associated with violence and danger to the same extent as Black adults? Are faces of Black women associated with violence and danger to the same extent as Black men?
